The Aura
'Matter is energy, Energy is Light, We are all light beings.’
Albert Einstein.
What is an Aura?
All living things (people, plants, animals, etc.) are made up of a complex combination of atoms, molecules, and energy cells. As these ingredients coexist, they generate a large magnetic energy field that can be sensed, felt, and even seen around the physical body. This energy field is often called an Aura.
Auras are commonly associated with people. Sometimes we even use them to describe people, "He has an aura about him.” or "She just has a glow about her". But in fact all living things generate this field of energy. When associated to a person, the aura can provide insight into the spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of the individual. The same can be said for animals and plants, as they too have emotions and a physical well-being.
There are many definitions that have been out forward to explain what is meant by the aura, but they all agree that it is some kind of emanation, something which issues or flows from living organisms and the idea that this emanation is electro—magnetic in nature is also implied. The aura is not a figment of the imagination but is capable of being scientifically demonstrated.
The human body has around it this enveloping field of energy, the vibrations of which are determined both by the material of the body, its conditions of health or disease, by the spirit, which permeates it, and by cosmic radiations. It is flexible in nature and can expand or contract depending upon various circumstances within the person it surrounds. In Spiritualism it is sometimes called “The Etheric Envelope" or “The Auric Field”. Because of the vibrations in this field of energy it is very often possible to sense the “auric field” of other people by what seems to be a mental impression of their characteristics.
Similarly the more powerful “auric field” of a healer can be sensed materially as its invigorating healthy frequencies are transmitted to the lower potential of the patient’s own “auric field”, thus developing a state of vibratory equilibrium between healer and patient in the first instance.
The vibrations of the “auric field” are visible as high frequency light to “sensitives” and various colours of different shades and intensity can be ascertained. These colours give rise to the word “aura” a term, though often used in Spiritualism does, at times, give cause for conflict amongst many sincere workers. The colours seen represent the characteristics of the person upon the various levels of their being, namely — spiritual, mental, emotional and physical. Because they represent what is going on within the person they are only a reflection, the same as an electric fire will have a reddish glow surrounding it which is a reflection of the heat in the element.
It has been noted that a luminous yellow around the brain is associated with intellect of a high order; light blue is a sign of devotion; pink - goodness; deep red - passion; gray — depression and anxiety; light green — a progressive mind; natural green — adaptability; dark green - physical and mental illness. As we change our mode of life and our way of thinking, the “auric field” is seen to radiate more refined or more gross colours, depending upon the actions taken.
The inner aura emanates from the physical body and extends from one to two inches away and around it. The form and colours of this aura indicates the state of health or disease present in that body. Another part of the aura radiates from the mental/emotional levels within the person and extends from one to two feet, or in some instances, if the feeling of emotion is very strong, a greater distance. A person’s thoughts and feelings are reflected in the colours seen, as well as the intellectual qualities of his or her mind.
In mental phenomena the aura helps determine the degree to which spirits can penetrate their thoughts to a medium. If the medium is uneducated, his/her mental aura is easily penetrated by average spirit minds. A powerful aura is an indication of a cultured person and is not so easily penetrated by ordinary spirits.
The human auric field is electromagnetic in character, and is used in magnetic healing as the conductor of the healer’s own vital energy to the patient. This is detrimental to the healer as it causes depletion and, in time, if not checked, illness.
The auric field of a spiritually evolved person reaches out far and beyond the other two aspects of the aura already mentioned. The colours seen in this emanation are of a very fine quality and appear to be of a ‘luminous’ construction. They seem to vibrate with an energy of their own.
The size of an aura can vary depending on the subject; a human will have a larger auric field than the average houseplant. A complete aura for a human can be between 6 to 25 feet or more all around the body.
The innermost aura extends only a few inches from the subject. This first section is usually a thin white light that outlines the entire body. Because this section is closest to the body, some people believe the compact intensity of energy generates the white colour of this layer. Still others believe this is the body’s protective shield, sort of a natural force field. Like any force field it can be drained or weakened in one area, or over charged in another, thereby creating slight colour or shape distortions in the aura.
The mid-section generally begins 3-4 inches from the physical body and can extend outward several feet. These layers of colour reflect recent emotions, personal characteristics or traits, as well as, the current well being or health of the subject.
The inner section of the aura is generally the easiest to perceive. The mid-section of the aura is a little harder to see within a short amount of time. The energy can be seen, however the perception of colours may take a little longer.
You can use these 2 inner sections of the aura in your every day life. Perceiving and interpreting the colours of these sections can help you deal with people at any given moment, increasing your ability to get along with others. Or by allowing you to avoid a negative or stressful situation that maybe out of your control.
If you see someone with a red lightening bolt dashing from their body, you can be fairly sure they're angry or anxious about someone or something. Perhaps now is not a good time to confront them with an issue. You can examine their aura later in the day and determine if they have calmed down from the earlier encounter.
Moving farther out, the third section reflects the more long lasting emotional and mental nature of the subject. The events of past lives and early memories from this lifetime are generally stored in this area. This outer section can be distinguished from the others by the lack of intensity in the colour of each layer. They appear as more translucent colours and therefore are more difficult to see. Because this last section generally contains the 'hidden' history of a person, it should not be read or interpreted without permission of the individual. Just as you wouldn't prod someone into telling you secrets of their life or to discuss painful memories, the same courtesy should be extended to this outer fringe of their aura.
The inner and midsections of the aura provide generalities that most people would not considered as too personal. But if you feel uncomfortable with treading on someone's 'space', by all means ask his or her permission. They may find your interest exciting and ask you to explain this second sight further.
As you become proficient in your ability, these types of interpretations can be applied to your interaction with animals, plants, or any situation that may arise. As long as you keep a positive intent to your 'readings', the right interpretations of these energy fields can increase your quality of life and help your interaction with others.
In addition to the inner workings of the aura around living beings, some people believe objects (non- living objects) also have an aura. There is some debate concerning the cause or origin of these energy fields. Some practitioners believe the molecular structure of these objects have an energy of their own and therefore the object, such as a table, has a real aura. Others believe, the object is simply being surrounded by an energy residue from a person, animal or plant that has recently come in contact with it, such as a dog sitting in a chair. Still others believe the only non-living objects that may have an aura are electrical appliances, such as a lamp or computer. What a practitioner sees in those cases is the energy field of electricity that travels through the appliance and not the appliance itself.

Colour & Meaning in the Aura
Red![]()
Energy, passion, living for today, strength, courage, confidence. Reds like to touch and see things and have trouble with spiritual and abstract concepts. As might be expected, red can also show a deep-rooted anger or an unforgiving nature. Can indicate fear or anger.
Vibrant Red: When seen in a clear, vibrant, and constant state, it represents fear or strong anxiety.
Dull Red: Generally represents anger. The deeper the red, the stronger the emotion.
A Consistent Red: A consistent dark red indicates a violent nature, a selfish and deceitful attitude.
A Red Spike: A spike of red, either vibrant or dull in appearance, indicates the same meanings as above. However instead of representing the consistent nature of the subject, the spike indicates the sudden emotion in the current conversation or situation the subject is engaged in at that moment.
Orange![]()
Thrill seekers and daredevils; outdoorsy; push limits; high stakes. Oranges may purposely put themselves in danger. Thrill, cunning, and adventure are essential to an orange's happiness. If tinged with brown, the orange aura displays laziness.
Confidence, ambition, pride.
Vibrant Orange: Indicates ambition, pride, and self-sufficiency.
Dull Orange: A lack of warmth, but a strong desire for success and popularity.
Yellow![]()
Fun loving, happy go lucky, energetic people. Yellows are a little childlike, very optimistic, and sensitive, and believe they are here to bring happiness to others. Yellows are generally very well liked, but do not care for work. If the yellow is tinged with red, the aura shows a trait of timidity.
Vibrant Yellow: Clear yellow denotes intelligence, wisdom, and success.
Dull Yellow: A dull yellow indicates jealousy, a selfishness, and negative outlook.
Green![]()
Intelligent, intuitive, and powerful. Greens do not like detailed plans, but prefer broad outlines. Greens gravitate to money, power, and business. They are organized list makers, and very good with patterns and problem solving. They set goals and achieve them, and may be workaholics. They're very strong willed and competitive. Green is also the colour of healing and therefore the aura can demonstrate a healing nature, or a person who has recently been healed him or herself. However, if the green is tinged with yellow it can be sign of deceitful intention.
Light Green shades, indicate the onset or potential for injury and the subject should be cautious for the next few weeks.
Darker Green shades, generally indicate the injury has already occurred and is in the process of healing.
Blue![]()
Blues are nurturing and loving, and exist to teach love. Relationships and spirituality are important to them, as is helping others. They are great teachers and nurses. Blues are very sensitive and emotional. They are also known for being hard workers, as well as very artistic.
Spiritually searching. A dissatisfaction or a feeling that there's something more.
Vibrant Blue: Pride, adoration, dedication.
A subject with any shade of the lighter blues is generally beginning their spiritual quest. (This does not mean a metaphysical quest, but rather a journey that will fill the 'missing' pieces of their current existence. This can just as easily be accomplished through any fundamental religion).
Darker blues typically indicate the subject has found their spiritual path and is continuing their education in the chosen realm.
Dull Blue: Taking life for granted, being too content, can appear to be selfish, narrow minded, arrogance, or self-righteous. There are many traits, which accompany religious zeal, such as self-righteousness, dedication, pride, adoration, and worship. These wide variations are usually indicated by some shade of blue.
Indigo![]()
You may have heard of the Indigo Children; Indigo is the newest colour found in people, and are primarily old souls who may remember where they are from. Indigos are honest, aware, intuitive, psychic, independent, fearless, stubborn, and sensitive. Indigos may also seem androgynous. Many religious people display the Indigo aura- it being the colour of those seeking answers.
Lavender
Lavenders are the flightiest of the colours, and are associated with fairies, dreams, and enchantments. Lavenders daydream, love beauty, and are often seen as unrealistic. Others may see them as lazy, but it isn’t the case- they have trouble recognizing that things need to be done!
Violet![]()
Violets are educators and leaders who are here to inspire higher ideals and improve the general quality of life. They like to travel and serve others. You may find lots of violets in the entertainment industry. Most violet's see themselves as having a special purpose, and are often frustrated when they don't reach it quickly.
Crystal![]()
Crystal auras are unique and rare; instead of having their own life force colour, their aura tends to change, matching those in the vicinity. This makes their personalities change frequently, which may drive the ones they love nuts. Crystals tend to drain energy from the area around them. They are also good at spiritual healing. Crystals need regular breaks from the people around them.
Tan![]()
Tan comes in four flavours: environmental, who love touching their environment; Sensitive, who tend to be more compassionate than other tans; Abstract, who go in many directions simultaneously; and Logical, who are the archetypical Tan. All tans love security, stability, and logic.
Environmental tans (often marked with greens) like structure and discipline. The sensitive tans (a pinkish tan) combine general tan traits with loving and intuitive compassion for others, but tend to bottle up their own feelings. Abstract tans are highly energetic and tend to try to solve problems from all ends at once. Logical tans have a tight, pale line of aura around the human body and process everything in an orderly, methodical manner. They are creatures of habit.
Brown![]()
Usually found with other colours, it means unsettling or distracting thoughts, or materialism to the exclusion of spirituality. This colour looks smoky rather than glowing.
Selfishness, deception, confusion, or discouragement.
Light Brown: Indicates confusion or discouragement. The lack of confidence in ones self, the present situation or in the subject being addressed.
Dark Brown: Indicates selfishness, faultfinding, and a tendency toward deception.
Gray![]()
Dark, depressing thoughts and the presence of a dark side or unclear intentions. Greys are also usually found with other colours.
Sulphur
Another smoky colour, sulphur is often a marker of pain, disease, and anger. If you have an illness, your aura may appear with a sulphur patch over whatever hurts or is ill.
White![]()
White auras are worse than black ones. Like white noise, a white aura indicates an unsettling lack of harmony in the body and mind. Several hours before death, the aura often becomes white and intense. Many aura researchers think this is why death is often indicated with white, not black; our ancestors and other cultures could see auras more easily than we do today. Having said all of this, white can be also perceived on the opposite end of the scale- as extremely good, i.e.: perfect in the balance and nature of the soul. This is extremely rare, though. It has been said that Jesus Christ’s halo was his white aura!
Indicates purity and/or protection. When detected in the outer layers of the aura, can indicate an area of the body, which has been over energized, or is over active.
Black![]()
Black is generally found in conjunction with other colours, and it can be good, as it protects your aura from the outside. But those with a black or partly black aura are generally those contemplating their own deaths to some degree. Often, black also means depression or some form of self-loathing.
Red Overlay![]()
Red overlays are a protective layer, but also cut off the owner from many other chances at human influence. Red overlays tend to have a fierce, if not completely natural, temper. Red overlays should be eradicated wherever it is possible.
Pink
Affection, love, enjoyment, pity, guilt.
Vibrant Pink: Indicates love, affection, and a resilient temperament.
Dull Pink: Denotes 'care with caution', pity or guilt.
To see the aura you have to be able to relax and concentrate, at the same time, and there is a trick to focusing the eyes in a special way.
1. You need soft light to train in, not dim, but good soft light. No harsh light shining or reflecting in your eyes! Get a book and cover it in Blue or Red paper. Stand it upright on a table several feet from you. Experiment with the distance until you find what is best for you. Make sure you have a plain neutral background. If the wall colour is wrong, hang a sheet of neutral coloured paper or cloth as a backdrop.
Note: The auras of the colours Blue and Red are the brightest and easiest to see. Blue has a Yellow aura and Red has a Green aura. The brightness and tone of the aura varies with the shade and tone of the colour used, so use bright primary colours.
2. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and relax. When you are calm, look at the book. Focus your eyes on nothing, a little to the side and past it. Gently hold and get used to that focus but don't strain your eyes or tense your eyes or forehead. Concentrate! You need a gentle, steady un-focus, similar to daydreaming.
Note: When you need to blink, do so, or it will cause your eyes to tense and water. Blink normally and quickly without changing focus, and do not become preoccupied with it. It may cause the aura to disappear for a second, but it will reappear quickly if you stay relaxed and hold your focus.
After a while you will see a pale narrow aura coming from the book. Hold the focus, don't look AT it, soon a bright Yellow or Green aura will start building up from the object. Don't change focus or look directly at it or the aura will disappear.
There is a reason for this strange un-focus. Your outer field of vision is many times more sensitive than the focused area is. Have you ever seen a movement, out of the corner of your eye, only to turn and see nothing there? What you may have seen is an aura building up from something and your outer field of vision has detected it.
3. Once you have completed the first step, gather several books and cover them, each with a different coloured paper. Study these one at a time and write down the auric colour for it. Next try using two at a time, and watch how the auric colours affect each other.
4. Get a pot plant or some flowers and study it. The aura you will see emanates from the living plant and also from the colours of the petals. The Orange hue comes from the green of the stems and leaves. You will also see a more distinct etheric and a shimmering optical effect around them. This shimmering is the energy field or living aura of the plant.
5. For the next step use an animal, dog, or cat etc, if you have one. Try and observe them when they are resting.
6. Observe your own aura. This can be done both inside and outside in the sun. Hold your arm out and study it against the sky or clouds. Alternatively, lie down and look at your legs. Make sure the skin is bare when you do this, and remember, grass will give off an Orange hue.
7. When you feel proficient enough, try it with a human subject. Just remember not to try too hard. Do it exactly the same as in the original exercise with the book. Get your volunteer to remove some of their clothing and study the bare skin area against a neutral background.
On a human subject, again, the first thing you will see is the etheric aura, like pale smoke clinging to the skin. Next you will see the shimmering optical effect in the air extending from several inches to a couple of feet deep, depending on the strength of their aura. Keep trying and the aura's colour will build up, and out from, the etheric. It will first appear as a narrow band of colour next to the etheric. This will expand slowly, if you hold your focus, until it is several inches or more thick.
8. The brightness of a person's aura has a lot to do with how they feel. If they feel happy and full of life their aura is stronger, larger and brighter. Try playing their favourite music, this will help to energize their aura and make it easier to see.
It takes practise to see the human aura, so don't be disappointed if you fail, or see very little, the first few times you try. If you managed to see the auric colours of the books, you CAN learn to see the human aura. Using this training method stimulates the forehead chakra, which is responsible for this ability. With use, it will grow in strength, and become progressively easier to do.
I have taught many people to see the aura using this method. The fast results build confidence and keep interest high. This ensures enough work and effort is put in to get the desired results... seeing the human aura.
